The Toyota bZ4X has received a substantial update for 2026, with more range, more technology, faster charging capability and a refreshed design. With faster performance and a host of practical new features, the Toyota bZ4X AWD aims to make EV ownership easier than ever.
After spending a few weeks behind the wheel covering a mix of country roads, highways and urban driving, I came away impressed by just how much Toyota has refined its electric SUV.
Toyota has given the bZ4X a noticeably sharper appearance for 2026.
The front end now adopts Toyota's latest "Hammerhead" design language, featuring sleek C-shaped LED lighting and a cleaner, more aerodynamic nose. The result is a more confident and modern look.
It's still a distinctive SUV, with angular bodywork, prominent wheel arch cladding and sharp lines that help it stand out in an increasingly crowded EV market. It's not conventionally pretty, but it's certainly memorable.
The panoramic glass roof is another highlight, flooding the cabin with natural light. During winter drives, it creates a brighter, more open feeling inside without needing to rely purely on artificial lighting.
The first thing that stands out is how thoughtfully designed the interior feels. Toyota has resisted the temptation to move everything into the touchscreen, which makes daily use considerably easier.
Dominating the dashboard is a new 14-inch multimedia touchscreen with sharp graphics, intuitive menus and useful EV-specific information in the sat-nav, including charging locations and battery pre-conditioning. Importantly, physical climate control dials remain, allowing quick adjustments without navigating menus.
The AWD model comes particularly well equipped, adding a panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, JBL premium audio system and hands-free power tailgate.
One of my favourite additions is the twin wireless phone charging pads. It's a simple feature, but incredibly practical for couples or families travelling together. Underneath the floating centre console is a surprisingly useful storage area that was the perfect size for my small bag, helping keep the cabin uncluttered.
Toyota has paid attention to the little details too. A vanity light switches on automatically when you slide the vanity mirror open, while the ambient lighting themes allow you to customise the cabin atmosphere to suit your mood. Drink storage is also well considered, with two cup holders between the front seats and there are bottle holders in the doors.
Comfort levels are excellent. The front seats are comfy, supportive and feature both heating and ventilation, with controls easily accessible through the touchscreen and climate controls. The driver's seat offers extensive electric adjustment, and a particularly useful feature that short people (like me) will appreciate is the seat automatically slides back when exiting the vehicle. I also loved that I could adjust the steering wheel to suit my height and driving preference, and together with the powered seat adjustment, it allowed me to get comfortable very quickly. It's a small detail, but one that makes a noticeable difference to comfort and confidence behind the wheel.
Rear passengers aren't forgotten either. The second row features heated seats, dual USB-C charging ports and huge legroom. Adults can comfortably stretch out, making longer journeys far more pleasant.
Toyota claims a 0-100km/h time of just 5.1 seconds for the AWD model and I experienced this first-hand. Merging onto highways and overtaking slower traffic requires little effort. There's plenty of instant electric torque available, providing a satisfying surge of acceleration when needed. During highway driving, the bZ4X had no trouble building speed quickly and confidently up to 110km/h. Ride comfort is also impressive. It feels calm, composed and remarkably relaxing to drive.
Toyota prioritises ease of use for drivers transitioning from petrol or hybrid vehicles. Rather than forcing a strong one-pedal driving experience, the bZ4X offers multiple levels of regenerative braking controlled through steering-wheel paddles. It's easy to increase or decrease regeneration depending on your preference, and a handy indicator appears in the driver's display when selected. Unlike some EVs, regenerative braking won't bring the vehicle to a complete stop, so you'll still need to use the brake pedal when coming to a halt. As a result, the driving experience feels more familiar to anyone coming from a combustion-engine or hybrid vehicle, making the transition to EV ownership much less intimidating for first-time electric car drivers.
Interestingly, I noticed the direct impact climate control can have on driving range. Running the air-conditioning/heater on full blast reduced the displayed range by around 11km, but the estimate returned once the system was switched off. Seeing the range adjust in real time is a useful reminder of how everyday driving conditions can influence energy consumption.
Charging was also very straightforward and stress-free. The vehicle charged quickly using a 75kW DC fast charger without any complications. When charging at home, the charging scheduler allows you to set charging times to coincide with cheaper off-peak electricity periods, helping reduce ownership costs.
Technology integration is generally excellent. The surround-view camera is exceptionally clear, while the various driver-assistance systems can easily be enabled or disabled to suit personal preferences. Adaptive cruise control operates smoothly, lane-keeping assistance is unobtrusive, and Toyota's comprehensive safety suite provides additional peace of mind without becoming irritating.

The hands-free tailgate is another genuinely useful feature. A simple swipe of your foot beneath the rear bumper opens or closes the tailgate when your hands are full.
To test the range on one of my weekend getaways, I set off on a 265km round trip to regional Victoria visiting local wineries.

While the real-world range didn't perfectly match the kilometres travelled, the result was close enough to give me confidence that Toyota's claims are achievable for everyday drivers without requiring range anxiety-inducing calculations.
My weekend trip suggests that Toyota's claimed 517km WLTP range for the AWD is achievable in favourable conditions, while real-world outcomes will naturally vary based on speed, weather, terrain and driving style.
The updated 2026 Toyota bZ4X AWD feels like the complete package and it perfectly suited my lifestyle needs.
It combines competitive range, strong performance, excellent comfort and a thoughtfully designed interior. Features such as dual wireless chargers, ventilated seats, rear-seat heating, regenerative braking adjustment, fast charging capability and the hands-free tailgate all contribute to making daily life easier.
Most importantly, the bZ4X remains unmistakably Toyota. It's solid, practical, comfortable and easy to live with. The driving experience is quiet and relaxing, the technology is intuitive, and the overall ownership proposition is backed by a brand with a strong reputation for reliability and durability.
For anyone looking to make the switch to electric without completely changing the way they drive, the Toyota bZ4X is worth considering. It’s not flashy, but it gets the fundamentals right – and for many drivers, that's exactly what matters most.
